Advanced Techniques: Diagnosing and Resolving Issues with UNC Paths in Smarter Mail

Smarter Mail may encounter errors when using UNC paths or shared drive locations for mail archive, domain, or data storage. This issue is caused by permissions issues, which may not occur on a network with domain authentication. To resolve this, adjust the service to use a login account with full control and a strong password.

Note: Smarter Tools recommends using ISCSI or SAN for efficient communication and more disk I/O required by email servers, as UNC is not ideal for archiving or off-server storage.

a) How do I adjust the permissions used by the Smarter Mail service ?

1. First, log into the Smarter Mail server as an administrator.

2. Then, open the Windows Services Console. (Start>Run>SERVICES.EXE)

3. After that, find the Smarter Mail service and right-click to stop the service. Then, right-click on it and select Properties.

4. Next, switch to the “Log On” tab and select “This Account“.

5. Then, enter your username and password using an account with storage drive permissions.

6. Finally, click Apply and restart the Smarter Mail system service to apply the changes.
