Understanding Indexing in cPanel: A Comprehensive Guide

cPanel allows you to customize the display of your website directory. You can customize the appearance of a directory on your website by setting the display of content on the front end and enabling or disabling indexing of files in that directory by selecting “No indexing.”

a) How to manage cPanel Indexes

1. Log into cPanel and navigate to the Advanced section to select Indexes tool or search for the Indexes tool in the search bar.

2. Then, select the desired directory by clicking the directory name. You can open the directory by clicking the folder icon corresponding to navigating within a directory.

3. After that, select the given options in the form:

  • Default System Setting: Enables the default settings set by your hosting provider.
  • No Indexing: Disables directory listing if there is no index file in the directory (such as index.php or index.html), causing an error message to the user.
  • Standard Indexing: Enable directory listing and allow the user to view the directory’s name.
  • Fancy Indexing: Enable directory listing and allow users to view the names and descriptions of files and directories within the indexed directory.

4. Finally, click the Save button to save your selection for this directory.
