Advanced Techniques: Email and Account Restoration in Smarter Mail

System administrators may encounter problems requiring user account recovery, email folder recovery, lost emails, or large message moves. Smarter Mail does not perform file system backups, but administrators can restore user data from the web interface without stopping the service if a backup procedure is performed.

Note: Smarter Tools suggests recovering user data from the web interface, as previous versions of Smarter Mail required administrators to stop the service.

a) How do I restore a user’s account in Smarter Mail?

1. First, log in to Smarter Mail as an administrator.

2. Then, click the Manage icon.

3. After that, click on the “Actions (…)” menu to display your options, and select “Attach User” in the “Domains” section.

4. Next, the user’s email address will be entered in the email field after a modal opens.

5. Finally, click Restore.

b) How do I restore a user’s email folder in Smarter Mail?

1. First, log into Smarter Mail as an administrator.

2. Then, click the “Manage” icon.

3. After that, click on the “Actions (…)” menu to display your options, and select “Attach Folder” in the “Domains” section.

4. Next, a modal will appear, prompting the user to enter their full email address in the email field for the folder to be restored.

5. Then, enter the folder path in the web interface, like “Inbox\Example Folder“, for restoring a subfolder created under your Inbox.

6. To restore a folder containing subfolders, ensure recursive switching is activated, ensuring all subfolders are also restored.

7. Finally, click “Restore“.

c) How do I restore a user’s email or move a large number of messages in Smarter Mail?

1. First, log into Smarter Mail as an administrator.

2. Then, click the “Manage” icon.

3. After that, click on the “Actions (…)” menu to display your options, and select “Rebuild Folder” in the “Domains” section.

4. Next, a modal will appear, requiring the user’s full email address in the email field for email restoration.

5. Then, enter the path in the Folder Path field, like “Inbox\Temp“, to create a new folder in the web interface.

6. To restore a folder containing subfolders, ensure recursive switching is enabled, ensuring all subfolders are also restored.

7. After that, click on Restore in the content pane toolbar.

8. Finally, select them and move them to the destination folder once the emails are restored to the user’s temporary folder.

Note: Smarter Tools suggests creating a new folder for restoring .grp files to existing folders, as UID conflict issues may arise. This method is recommended for restoring .eml files to existing email folders.
