Managing Mail Exchanges: A Guide to cPanel MX Entry Configuration

cPanel’s email routing feature allows users to route emails to specific servers, ensuring the changes are reflected in the domain’s DNS entries. This feature is essential for creating a backup server for your domain’s mail server and enabling MX entries for Google Apps email management.

a) How to configure email routing in cPanel

1. Log into cPanel and navigate to the Email section to select MX Entry tool or search for the MX Entry tool in the search bar.

2. Then, select the desired domain from the drop-down list and configure email routing settings which are displayed in bold.

3. After that, you can adjust the current settings only if necessary and select from four options based on their requirements.
  • Auto Detect configuration: The cPanel can automatically identify the optimal settings based on the priority of the MX records.
  • Local Mail Exchanger: Allows your server to receive emails even if higher-priority MX entries are found, sending them to both domains.
  • Backup Mail Exchanger: Your server serves as a backup mail exchanger, storing emails until your primary server returns online, requiring a correct MX entry for the primary exchanger.
  • Remote Mail Exchanger: Your domain is unable to accept any mail and redirects it to your main email server.

4. Finally, click the Change button and your new settings will be displayed in bold letters.

b) How to add an MX Record

1. Log into cPanel and navigate to the Email section to select MX Entry tool or search for the MX Entry tool in the search bar.

2. Then, scroll down to Add New Record on the MX Entry page and enter the priority of the MX record; lower the number; and have a higher priority. Zero has the highest priority.

3. After that, input the desired domain for email rerouting.

4. Finally, click the Add New Record button to add a new MX record.

c) How to edit or remove an MX Record

1. Log into cPanel and navigate to the Email section to select MX Entry tool or search for the MX Entry tool in the search bar.

2. Then, click on the Edit or Delete link button in the action corresponding to the desired MX entry.

3. After that, it will prompt you to select your priority and domain, modify the desired content, and finally click on the Edit button to save the changes.

4. To delete an MX record, click the Delete button.
