Advanced Techniques: Configuring Key Ports for Smarter Mail

During the initial setup of a Smarter Mail server, it may be necessary to open specific ports on your network firewall or the Windows Server firewall itself.

a) Common ports used for email transmission in Smarter Mail

  1. Port 80: Smarter Mail’s web interface is accessed through HTTP and ActiveSync traffic, which are the same port used by ActiveSync.
  2. Port 443: Smarter Mail’s web interface is accessed through HTTPS and ActiveSync traffic, which will be the same port used by ActiveSync.
  3. Port 25 (SMTP port): use for SMTP traffic.
  4. Port 465: SSL/TLS/SMTP port.
  5. Port 587 (submission port): used as an alternate for SMTP traffic, which supports SSL/TLS.
  6. Port 110 (POP port): used to establish a POP connection to the server.
  7. Port 995: SSL/TLS POP port.
  8. Port 143 (IMAP port): used to establish an IMAP connection to the server.
  9. Port 993: SSL/TLS IMAP port.
  10. Port 389 (LDAP port): used for LDAP connections to the server.
  11. Port 5222: XMPP port: used for XMPP connections, also known as Smarter Mail’s chat feature.
  12. Port 53: Domain Name System (DNS) Resolution. Note: Port 53 is exclusively used for DNS and is not necessary to open if DNS is not running on the Smarter Mail server.

Note: Smarter Mail may require additional ports for SSL configuration, which can be specified in the interface. Port numbers are required, and all ports use TCP connections, except for port 53 for DNS, which uses UDP.
