Efficient Communication through Comments: A Guide in Google Docs

Comments are one of the features that allow you to collaborate in Google Docs.

a) How do I create a new comment in Google Docs ?

1. First, select the text you wish to comment on and click on the button on the right side of the screen.

2. Then, the comment box will open, allowing you to input your message.

3. To ensure specific people see your comment, use the @ symbol and type their email address, then select them from your contact list.

Note: Google requires users to share a document with the tagged person before posting a comment if they do not have access to the document.

4. After that, you can assign a comment to them, who will then mark it as complete when tagging someone.

5. Finally, click “Comment“.

b) How do I reply to comments in Google Docs ?

1. First, click and select it to reply to a comment.

2. Finally, enter your response and click Reply.

c) How do I edit and link to comments in Google Docs ?

1. To edit or delete a comment made by mistake, click on the three dots in the upper right corner, but note that deleting comments is permanent.

2. To link to the first comment in a thread, click on the three dots next to it.

3. The dialog box allows you to copy a link to share it with others, which is particularly useful in lengthy documents with numerous comments.

d) How do I comment history in Google Docs ?

1. Once you or your co-authors have resolved the discussed issue, click the checkmark to conclude the discussion.

2. The comment will disappear, but it can still be accessed in your comment history by clicking the comment icon in the upper-right corner next to the share button.

3. The Comment History window displays active and resolved comments, and to reopen a comment thread, click “Re-open“.

4. To adjust email notification settings, click Notifications in the Comment History window. Document owners are notified of every comment, while others are only notified if mentioned directly.
